Microplásticas

Microplásticas are small plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter. They originate from the breakdown of larger plastic items through environmental processes like UV radiation, wave action, and physical abrasion. Primary microplásticas are manufactured intentionally in this size, such as in microbeads found in some personal care products and plastic pellets used in manufacturing.

These particles are pervasive and have been detected in oceans, freshwater systems, soil, air, and even in the food we eat and the water we drink. Their small size allows them to be easily ingested by a wide range of organisms, from plankton to large marine mammals. Once ingested, microplásticas can accumulate in the digestive tracts of animals, potentially leading to physical blockage, reduced feeding, and starvation.

The long-term ecological and human health impacts of microplástica exposure are still under active research. Concerns include the physical harm to organisms, the potential for microplásticas to leach harmful chemicals, and their ability to absorb and transport other environmental pollutants. Efforts to address the microplástica problem involve reducing plastic production, improving waste management, and developing biodegradable alternatives.
