Metlika

Metlika is a town in southeastern Slovenia and the seat of the Municipality of Metlika. It lies on the Kolpa River, near the Croatian border, in the traditional region of White Carniola (Bela krajina) and is part of the Southeast Slovenia Statistical Region. The town’s history stretches back to the Middle Ages and is marked by a hilltop fortress and a compact old town.

Metlika Castle dominates the town from a hill above the river. The castle complex dates from the late medieval period and was used as a border fortress in various historical conflicts. Today it forms part of the historic townscape and houses cultural and historical exhibits. The Belokranjski muzej (Belokranje Museum) in Metlika preserves regional artifacts and records related to White Carniola.

The surrounding countryside is known for its vineyards and agricultural traditions. The area is associated with wine production, including the local red wine known as Metliška črnina. In addition to viticulture, the town serves as a center for commerce, crafts, and rural tourism. Tourism is enhanced by outdoor activities along the Kolpa River, such as hiking and water-based recreation, and by the appeal of traditional markets and regional cuisine.

Metlika is accessible by road and rail and acts as a local service center for White Carniola. The Kolpa River valley and the nearby border region attract visitors interested in nature, history, and cultural heritage, making Metlika a gateway to the White Carniola landscape.
