Metervermogen

Metervermogen is a Dutch term used in electrical metrology to refer to two related concepts associated with measurement devices: the internal power consumption of the meter itself, and the maximum power range that the meter is designed to measure.

In the sense of internal consumption, metervermogen denotes the amount of electrical power required to operate the measurement electronics and display, i.e., the meter's own standby power. For electronic electricity meters, this standby consumption is typically low, ranging from a few tens to a few hundreds of milliwatts, depending on supply voltage, sampling rate, and communication modules. The power consumption is usually specified in the device's datasheet or user manual as standby power or eigenverbruik.

In another sense, metervermogen can refer to the meter's vermogensbereik or rating: the maximum apparent power (VA) or real power (W) that the instrument can accurately measure and safely handle. This rating is determined by the current and voltage ranges provided by the meter, including the current transformer (CT) and voltage transformer (VT) connections in high-power installations. Household meters typically operate at 230 V with a certain nominal current (e.g., 5–100 A or more), while industrial meters may be rated for much higher currents up to several kiloamperes. The chosen CT/VT and associated scaling define the metervermogen.

In practice, metervermogen is described in device specifications and standards for metering equipment; the exact meaning can vary by context, so it is important to consult the specific datasheet.
