MetaPuzzles are puzzles whose solution depends on the results of other puzzles or external information, creating a meta-layer that sits above individual tasks. They are a common feature of puzzle hunts, escape-room style experiences, and online puzzle communities, where solvers must connect a set of sub-puzzles to reach a final answer.

Typical mechanics involve collecting answers, codes, or clues from a number of unrelated puzzles, then using those items to derive a final solution. This may require pattern recognition, data extraction, indexing by puzzle order, or translating answers into coordinates, letters, or numbers. The final answer is often a word, phrase, or code that unlocks the next stage of the hunt or the overall puzzle set.

Variants include acrostic meta-puzzles, where the initial letters of sub-puzzles spell a message; thematic metas that require solving all pieces to reveal a narrative; and multi-step metas that involve solving a meta-puzzle as well as several sub-puzzles. Meta puzzles may rely on external data such as web pages, images, or real-world references, which solvers must locate and interpret.

In practice, meta-puzzles encourage collaboration and cross-disciplinary problem solving. They have a long-standing presence in organized puzzle hunts, such as the MIT Mystery Hunt, and have a strong presence on puzzle-focused communities. Critics note that the difficulty can be uneven and that access to meta-puzzle clues may depend on participation in a larger puzzle ecosystem.
