Metapalkinnot

Metapalkinnot is a Finnish award that recognizes outstanding contributions to the fields of digital media, interactive arts, and contemporary cultural production. The award was established in 2015 by the Finnish Cultural Foundation in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Culture. Its purpose is to highlight and celebrate innovative projects and individuals who have advanced the digital cultural sector within Finland and internationally.

Eligibility for the Metapalkinnot is open to Finnish citizens, residents, and artists associated with Finnish institutions who have produced or facilitated significant works in areas such as game design, virtual reality experiences, digital storytelling, and new media art. Candidates are nominated annually by peers, and a selection committee composed of experts in technology, art, and media studies evaluates the nominations based on originality, technical excellence, and cultural impact.

The award is presented at an annual ceremony held in Helsinki, usually in late autumn. In addition to the main prize, which includes a monetary award and a commemorative plaque, there is a special “Emerging Talent” category aimed at encouraging younger artists and developers. Recipients of the Metapalkinnot include celebrated creators such as video game developer Ari Holopainen, visual storyteller and VR pioneer Meri Koskinen, and the digital art collective Hyvikko, who received the award in 2022 for their project “Urban Soundscapes”.

Over the years, the Metapalkinnot has gained recognition as a key platform for promoting Finland’s growing reputation in the global digital arts landscape. By encouraging experimentation and collaboration across disciplines, the award helps to sustain a vibrant ecosystem of creative innovation and cultural exchange.
