Metallurgie

Metallurgy is the domain of materials science that studies metals and their alloys, covering extraction of metals from ores, refining, alloying, and the production of metallic products through processing and shaping. It encompasses both extractive metallurgy, which deals with obtaining metals from ores, and physical metallurgy, which studies the properties and behavior of metallic materials.

Historically, metallurgy emerged in the Bronze and Iron Ages with early smelting and alloying; the modern era saw advances in steelmaking (Bessemer process, open-hearth, basic oxygen furnaces) and alloy development. Today, metallurgists work across scales from ore deposits to finished components, integrating chemistry, physics, and engineering.

Key concepts include phase diagrams, crystal structure, diffusion, strengthening mechanisms, heat treatment, and alloy design. Processes include mining and ore processing, smelting and refining, alloying, casting, deformation processing (rolling, forging), heat treatment, welding, and surface engineering. Characterization methods include hardness testing, tensile testing, microscopy, spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and non-destructive testing.

Applications span construction, transportation, energy, electronics, and catalysis. Environmental and economic considerations drive recycling and sustainable metallurgy, reducing energy use and emissions and recovering metals from waste streams.
