Metallipuhaltimet

Metallipuhaltimet, often translated as brass instruments, form a family of musical instruments characterized by their construction from metal and their sound production through the vibration of the player's lips against a mouthpiece. This vibration creates a buzzing sound that is amplified and shaped by the instrument's tubing and bell. The pitch is altered by changing the lip tension, and for many metallipuhaltimet, by manipulating a system of valves or slides.

Common metallipuhaltimet include the trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, and cornet. Each instrument possesses a unique range and timbre, contributing to the diverse sonic textures found in orchestras, bands, and various musical genres. The tubing of these instruments can be cylindrical or conical, affecting the harmonic series produced. Valves, typically piston or rotary, redirect the airflow through additional lengths of tubing, effectively lowering the fundamental pitch and allowing access to a wider range of notes. Slides, as seen on the trombone, achieve a similar effect by manually extending or shortening the instrument's overall length.
