Metallinkeräyslaitokset, often translated as metal recycling facilities or scrap metal processing plants, are industrial sites dedicated to the collection, sorting, and processing of scrap metal. These facilities play a crucial role in the circular economy by diverting metal waste from landfills and reintroducing it as raw material for new manufacturing.

The process typically begins with the arrival of scrap metal, which can come from various sources including demolition sites, industrial waste, old vehicles, and household appliances. Upon arrival, the metal is often weighed and inspected. Following this, it undergoes a sorting process, which can involve manual labor and advanced machinery like magnets to separate ferrous metals (like iron and steel) from non-ferrous metals (like aluminum, copper, and brass).

Once sorted, the metal may be further processed. This can include baling, shredding, or crushing to reduce its volume for easier transportation and melting. Some facilities also have capabilities for de-manufacturing, such as removing hazardous components from end-of-life vehicles. The cleaned and prepared scrap metal is then sent to smelters and foundries where it is melted down and reformed into new metal products, thereby reducing the need for virgin ore extraction. This recycling process conserves natural resources, saves energy, and reduces pollution associated with primary metal production.
