Metafüüsiline

Metafüüsiline is the Estonian adjective relating to metaphysics or to what lies beyond the physical world. The term derives from Greek meta "beyond" and physikē "physics" (through the Latin tradition of metphysica). In philosophical usage, metafüüsiline pertains to questions about the fundamental nature of reality that go beyond empirical investigation, such as existence, objects and their properties, space and time, causality, identity, necessity and possibility, and the mind–body relation.

Historically, metaphysical inquiry has roots in ancient philosophy, notably in Aristotle, who examined principles of being and change. It was developed further in the medieval period by Scholastic thinkers, and in modern philosophy was reevaluated by figures such as Kant, who distinguished phenomena from noumena, with continued debate in both analytic and continental traditions. Contemporary metaphysics covers topics including ontology (the study of what exists), modality, causation, time, persistence, universals, and the nature of realism versus anti-realism, among other foundational questions about reality and explanation.

In everyday language, metafüüsiline can be used more loosely to describe ideas that seem transcendent, speculative, or supernatural, or as a stylistic descriptor in literature and art (for example metafüüsiline poeesia). In academic contexts, metaphysics remains a central area of philosophy, though its methods and aims vary across traditions.
