Metadinitrobentene

Metadinitrobentene, also known as 1,3-dinitrobenzene, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H4(NO2)2. It is a nitroaromatic compound, characterized by two nitro groups attached to a benzene ring in a meta position relative to each other. It typically appears as pale yellow crystals.

Metadinitrobentene is synthesized through the nitration of nitrobenzene using a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. This electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction results in the introduction of a second nitro group onto the benzene ring, predominantly at the meta position due to the directing effect of the existing nitro group.

The compound finds limited direct commercial application, but it serves as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals. For example, it can be reduced to meta-phenylenediamine, a precursor for dyes and polymers. Due to the presence of nitro groups, metadinitrobentene is considered potentially hazardous. It is toxic if inhaled, absorbed through the skin, or ingested, and can cause methemoglobinemia, a condition that impairs the blood's ability to carry oxygen.
