Metaboloners are a term used in speculative biology and science fiction to describe cellular systems or organisms that organize metabolism around transient, self-assembling enzyme assemblies known as metabolons. The name combines metabolism with the suffix -oner, suggesting a unit or agent.

Definition and concept: A metaboloner refers to a system in which metabolic flux is governed by dynamic metabolon complexes that assemble and disassemble in response to cellular state and environmental cues. This on-demand organization enhances substrate channeling, increases catalytic efficiency, and reduces diffusion losses. In such systems, regulatory signals control scaffold proteins or multienzyme complexes that bring sequential enzymes into proximity, enabling rapid flux rerouting when conditions change.

Origin and usage: The term arose in discussions of metabolic organization and in speculative literature exploring how cells might optimize metabolism beyond classical static pathway maps. It is not a widely adopted term in mainstream biochemistry, and there is no consensus on a formal definition or real-world instances.
