Merkistökoodien, often translated as character encoding, refers to the systems used to represent text in computers and other digital devices. These systems assign a numerical value to each character, such as letters, numbers, and symbols. Without a standardized way to represent these characters, digital communication and data storage would be impossible.

Early character encoding systems, like ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange), were developed in the mid-20th century. ASCII uses 7 bits to represent 128 characters, including English letters, numbers, and punctuation. While foundational, ASCII is limited in its ability to represent characters from languages other than English, as well as special symbols.

To address these limitations, more comprehensive encoding schemes were developed. Extended ASCII variations emerged, using 8 bits to represent 256 characters, allowing for a wider range of symbols and accented letters. However, the proliferation of different extended ASCII sets led to compatibility issues.

Unicode is the modern standard for character encoding. It aims to represent all characters from all writing systems in the world, as well as many symbols and emojis. Unicode assigns a unique number, called a code point, to each character. Different encoding forms, such as UTF-8, UTF-16, and UTF-32, are used to store these code points in a computer's memory or in files. UTF-8 is particularly popular due to its variable-length encoding, which is backward-compatible with ASCII and efficient for storing English text, while also supporting the vast range of Unicode characters.
