Mercias

Mercias is a fictional region and cultural realm in the fantasy world of Valoria. It lies in central Valoria, comprising a belt of river valleys and plateaus bordered by the Varin Hills to the north and the coast to the south. Inhabitants are called Mercians.

Historically a patchwork of autonomous duchies, Mercias formed the Mercias Confederation in the 10th century, with a rotating presidency and a representative council. The federation coordinates defense and major infrastructure while allowing local governance.

The economy centers on agriculture, wool, timber, and river trade along the Silver River. Mercias supports a guild-based urban culture, with stone-and-timber architecture and a rich bardic and market tradition. The Merci language includes several dialects.

Key settlements include Rivergate, Eldenford, and Cairnhold, a ceremonial capital. Landmarks include the Stone Circle of Lyr and the Bridge of Silver.

In contemporary fantasy narratives, Mercias is depicted as a semi-autonomous region with shifting borders and a history of diplomatic mediation, frontier towns, and occasional conflicts between central authorities and provincial leagues.
