Mercaptopropyl

Mercaptopropyl is a functional group used in organic and organosilicon chemistry to denote a propyl chain terminated by a thiol (mercapto) group. The typical representation is –CH2–CH2–CH2–SH, where a molecule or surface is linked through the propyl backbone and the reactive thiol at the end provides sites for further chemistry.

In practical use, mercaptopropyl groups are common in silane coupling agents that functionalize inorganic substrates such as silica, glass, and metal oxides.
