Meranun

Meranun, also known as the Maranao, are an ethnolinguistic group primarily found in the Philippines, concentrated in the areas around Lanao Lake in Mindanao. They are one of the largest Muslim groups in the country. Their name, Maranao, translates to "people of the lake," directly referencing their ancestral homeland.

The Maranao have a rich cultural heritage characterized by their unique art forms, particularly their intricate okir carvings and textile weaving. These artistic traditions often feature geometric patterns and stylized depictions of natural elements. Historically, they were known for their strong sultanates and a complex social structure.

Their traditional livelihood includes fishing in Lanao Lake and agriculture. Islam is a central aspect of Maranao identity and daily life, influencing their customs, laws, and social practices. The Maranao language, also called Maranao, belongs to the Malayo-Polynesian language family.

The community has faced various challenges throughout history, including periods of conflict and displacement. Despite these adversities, the Maranao people have strived to preserve their distinct culture and traditions, contributing significantly to the diverse tapestry of Philippine society.
