Meninggatho

Meninggatho is a South Sulawesi language spoken in the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. It is one of several dozen traditional languages from this region, spoken by various groups that have been present in the area for centuries.

In linguistic terms, Meninggatho is a non-Austronesian language belonging to the South Sulawesi language family. This classification suggests a possible ancestral link with other languages spoken in the region. Due to a lack of comprehensive research, much of what is known about Meninggatho language has been sketched out in broad strokes. As a minority language, it faces competition for communicative relevance and cultural authority. Efforts at preservation continue, using standardized characters in the Small Indonesian alphabet so that speakers can convey meaning in written communication. However, use of Meninggatho in the Malukus continues as local adults pass it down within households.
