Meines

Meines is the genitive singular form of the German possessive determiner mein. It is used to express possession when the possessor is a masculine or neuter noun in the genitive case. In attributive possessive phrases, meines accompanies the possessor noun in genitive, as in das Auto meines Bruders (the car of my brother) and das Zimmer meines Hauses (the room of my house).

For feminine possessors or possessors in plural, the genitive form is meiner, as in das Auto meiner Schwester and das Auto meiner Eltern. The form meines is therefore reserved for masculine or neuter possessor nouns in singular genitive. In addition to ordinary usage, meines appears in certain fixed expressions, such as Meines Wissens (to the best of my knowledge) and Meines Erachtens (in my opinion).

Usage notes: In contemporary spoken German, the genitive is relatively uncommon, and many speakers prefer the von + Dativ construction for indicating possession, e.g., das Auto von meinem Bruder rather than das Auto meines Bruders. In written German, especially in formal or literary contexts, the genitive form meines is more likely to be encountered, particularly in phrases involving statements of knowledge or opinion.
