Mehrfachzustände, a German term translating to "multiple states" or "superpositions," is a concept primarily encountered in quantum mechanics. It describes the phenomenon where a quantum system can exist in a combination of several distinct possible states simultaneously. This is in stark contrast to classical physics, where an object is always in a single, definite state.

A classic example is the superposition of electron spin. An electron's spin can be either "up" or "down" along a particular axis. In a Mehrfachzustand, an electron can be in a state that is simultaneously both "spin up" and "spin down," with certain probabilities assigned to each outcome. The act of measurement or observation "collapses" the superposition, forcing the system into one of the definite states.

The mathematical description of a Mehrfachzustand is typically a linear combination of the basis states.
