Mehdia

Mehdia is a small coastal town in north‑western Morocco, located in the Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region. It lies approximately 30 kilometres south of the city of Tangier and sits on the Atlantic Ocean, where the beautiful Atlantic coast meets the surrounding Atlas foothills. The town’s name is derived from the Arabic word for “beloved” and the area has been inhabited since Phoenician times, with Roman and Muslim layers visible in local archaeological sites.

The population of Mehdia is modest, with a rough estimate of around 15,000 residents. The community is largely engaged in fishing, with docks that serve both commercial and small-scale private operations. In recent decades, the town has also seen modest development in tourism due to its scenic beaches, historic forts, and the annual Tuna fish Festival, which attracts visitors from neighboring countries. The town’s economy also benefits from nearby agricultural activities, focusing on olives, citrus fruits, and fruit trees grown on the fertile terraces.

Mehdia is part of the greater Tangier metropolitan area, providing residents with access to urban amenities while maintaining its distinct rural charm. Major transportation links include the A8 highway that connects it to Tangier and the nearby coastal road that follows the Atlantic seaboard. Public transport is provided by regional bus routes and nearby train stations in Tangier, which allow easier movement for both locals and tourists. Culturally, Mehdia showcases a blend of northern Moroccan traditions, Islamic architectural heritage, and remnants of Franco‑Spanish influence from the colonial era.
