Medunsa

Medunsa is a former medical university located in South Africa. Its full name was Medunsa University, and it was established in 1976 as a medical school for Black students during the apartheid era. The institution was situated in the Ga-Rankuwa area, northwest of Pretoria. Initially, it was intended to address the severe shortage of healthcare professionals serving the Black population.

Over the years, Medunsa expanded its academic offerings beyond medicine to include other health sciences such as dentistry, pharmacy, and physiotherapy. It played a significant role in training a generation of Black healthcare practitioners who would serve underserved communities. Medunsa University was a distinct entity for several decades, operating independently.

In 2005, Medunsa University merged with the University of Limpopo to form a new institution. This merger aimed to create a larger, more comprehensive university with a broader reach and enhanced academic capacity. The combined entity retained the University of Limpopo name, and the Ga-Rankuwa campus became one of its primary sites. The legacy of Medunsa continues through the graduates and the ongoing contributions to healthcare education and practice in South Africa.
