Mediumschannels

Mediumschannels is a term used in discussions of information transmission and wave propagation to denote channels whose properties are determined by the physical medium through which the signal travels. The term is not part of a formal, universally adopted standard and may be used variably in literature. In general, a mediumchannel emphasizes the interaction between medium characteristics—such as attenuation, dispersion, impedance, and boundary conditions—and the channel’s signal-carrying performance.

In optics, the optical fiber channel can be described as a mediumchannel because its bandwidth and noise characteristics depend on the glass, its refractive index, and modal dispersion. In underwater acoustics, the acoustic channel between transmitter and receiver is strongly shaped by water properties such as temperature, salinity, and depth, leading to medium-dependent multipath and attenuation.
