Boaty McBoatface is the informal name given to a polar research vessel operated by the British Antarctic Survey. The vessel's official name is RRS Sir David Attenborough. The name Boaty McBoatface originated from a public poll conducted by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) in 2016 to choose a name for the new ship. The poll was intended to engage the public with scientific endeavors.

The poll became a viral sensation, with "Boaty McBoatface" receiving an overwhelming number of votes, far surpassing other suggestions. This outcome led to considerable public discussion and media attention regarding the naming process. Despite the popularity of "Boaty McBoatface," the NERC ultimately decided to name the research vessel RRS Sir David Attenborough, in honor of the renowned naturalist and broadcaster. However, as a compromise and in recognition of the public's engagement, the name Boaty McBoatface was assigned to a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROUV) that serves aboard the RRS Sir David Attenborough. The ROUV is used for exploring the deep ocean and collecting scientific data.
