Mayuge

Mayuge is a district in the Eastern Region of Uganda, within the Busoga sub-region. The administrative center is Mayuge Town. The district is bordered by Bugiri District to the north, Iganga District to the west, Namayingo District to the south, and Lake Victoria to the east.

Geography and people: Mayuge lies in the Lake Victoria basin and is predominantly rural. The population includes Basoga and related communities, many of whom speak Lusoga alongside local languages. Rural life centers on farming and fishing, with communities organized around sub-counties and parishes.

Economy: The district’s economy is anchored in fishing on Lake Victoria and subsistence agriculture. Common crops include maize, cassava, bananas, beans and groundnuts. Small-scale trade and informal services support local livelihoods, particularly in the towns along the lake shore.

Administration and services: Mayuge District is governed by a district local government and is divided into several sub-counties and a town council. The district centers on Mayuge Town as its administrative hub, with roads and markets linking communities to neighboring districts and lake-front towns.

Development and challenges: Like many rural districts in Uganda, Mayuge faces challenges such as access to clean water, sanitation, healthcare, and reliable market linkages. Government and non-government programs focus on improving agriculture, fisheries, education and health services, aiming to raise living standards and resilience for local communities.
