Matsqui

Matsqui is a geographical area and former municipality located in the Fraser Valley region of British Columbia, Canada. Situated east of Abbotsford, it is primarily known for its agricultural lands and its historical significance. The name "Matsqui" is derived from the Halkomelem Indigenous language, meaning "smooth or level place," referring to the fertile river flats of the Fraser River.

Historically, Matsqui was an important area for agriculture, particularly for dairy farming and berry cultivation. The fertile soil and access to water from the Fraser River made it an ideal location for farming. In the early 20th century, it developed as a distinct community with its own infrastructure and services.

In 1995, Matsqui, along with the municipalities of Abbotsford, Mount Lehman, and Sumas, amalgamated to form the City of Abbotsford. While no longer an independent municipality, the name "Matsqui" continues to be used to refer to the geographical area and its surrounding agricultural districts within the larger City of Abbotsford. The area retains its rural character and remains a significant agricultural hub. It is also known for the Matsqui Institution, a federal correctional facility.
