Massenheter, or units of mass, are standardized quantities used to measure the mass of objects in various systems of measurement. Mass is a fundamental physical property that quantifies the amount of matter in an object, distinct from weight, which is the force exerted by gravity on that mass. The choice of mass units depends on the context, ranging from everyday applications to scientific and industrial precision.

In the International System of Units (SI), the base unit of mass is the kilogram (kg), defined since 2019 by the Planck constant rather than a physical artifact. The kilogram is widely used globally, particularly in science, engineering, and trade. Smaller and larger multiples of the kilogram, such as the gram (g), milligram (mg), and tonne (t), are also common. For example, 1 gram equals 0.001 kilograms, while 1 tonne equals 1,000 kilograms.

Other systems of measurement use different mass units. In the imperial system, commonly used in the United States, the pound (lb) and ounce (oz) are standard. One pound is equivalent to approximately 0.453592 kilograms, and one ounce is about 0.0283495 kilograms. The avoirdupois system, a variant of the imperial system, is frequently used for everyday measurements, such as weighing food or goods.

In the metric system, prefixes are used to denote multiples or fractions of the base unit. For instance, "milli-" represents one-thousandth (e.g., milligram), while "kilo-" represents one thousand (e.g., kilogram). This system is highly scalable, allowing for precise measurements across a wide range of magnitudes.

Accurate measurement of mass is essential in numerous fields, including chemistry, manufacturing, and medicine. Balances and scales are commonly used tools to determine mass, ensuring consistency and reliability in various applications. Understanding and correctly applying mass units are crucial for maintaining accuracy in both practical and theoretical contexts.
