Massapainotetut refers to a Finnish term that translates to "mass-weighted" in English. This concept is primarily used in the context of physics and engineering, particularly in the calculation of moments of inertia and center of mass. When dealing with objects of varying density or distributed mass, a simple geometric calculation may not suffice. Mass weighting accounts for the fact that different parts of an object contribute differently to its overall mass distribution and rotational behavior.

For instance, when calculating the center of mass of a composite object, each component's mass and its position are considered. The total center of mass is then a weighted average of the individual centers of mass, where the weights are the masses of the respective components. Similarly, in determining the moment of inertia, which measures an object's resistance to rotational acceleration, the mass distribution relative to the axis of rotation is crucial. Mass weighting ensures that denser or more massive parts of an object, located further from the axis, have a greater impact on the moment of inertia than less dense or less massive parts closer to the axis.
