Maskihäviöt

Maskihäviöt, a Finnish term, translates to "mask losses" and refers to a phenomenon primarily observed in inductive components like transformers and inductors. It encompasses the energy dissipated as heat within the magnetic core material due to the alternating magnetic flux. This energy loss is a consequence of two main effects: hysteresis loss and eddy current loss.

Hysteresis loss occurs because the magnetic domains within the core material are repeatedly realigned by the changing magnetic field. This process requires energy, which is converted into heat as the domains resist changes in their orientation. The magnitude of hysteresis loss depends on the magnetic properties of the core material, particularly its coercivity.

Eddy current loss arises from the induced currents that circulate within the conductive core material itself, driven by the changing magnetic flux. These circulating currents encounter electrical resistance within the core, leading to energy dissipation in the form of heat, following Joule's law. To minimize eddy current losses, the cores of transformers and inductors are typically constructed from thin laminations of ferromagnetic material, insulated from each other. This segmentation breaks up the paths for eddy currents, significantly increasing the overall resistance and reducing their magnitude.

Maskihäviöt are a critical consideration in the design and efficiency calculations of electrical power equipment. Minimizing these losses is essential for improving energy efficiency, reducing operational costs, and preventing overheating of components. The selection of appropriate core materials and construction techniques plays a vital role in controlling maskihäviöt.
