Masinatsüklites, often translated as "machine cycles" or "machine states," refers to the fundamental steps a central processing unit (CPU) performs to execute an instruction. This process is the core of how computers operate, allowing them to process data and perform tasks.

The instruction cycle typically consists of several stages. The first is fetch, where the CPU retrieves an instruction from memory. Following fetch is decode, during which the CPU interprets the instruction to understand what operation needs to be performed and what data it will use. The third stage is execute, where the CPU performs the actual operation, such as an arithmetic calculation or data transfer. Some models include an additional stage called memory access, which occurs if the instruction requires reading from or writing to memory. Finally, the write-back stage stores the result of the execution, either back into memory or into a CPU register.

These cycles repeat continuously as long as the computer is running. The speed at which a CPU can complete these cycles is measured in clock speed, typically in gigahertz (GHz). A higher clock speed means the CPU can perform more instruction cycles per second, leading to faster overall performance.
