Deviations from the stoichiometric ratio can occur for various reasons. A "rich" mixture has more fuel than air (a ratio less than 14.7:1), which can lead to increased power but also reduced fuel economy and potentially higher emissions of unburned hydrocarbons. A "lean" mixture has more air than fuel (a ratio greater than 14.7:1), which generally improves fuel economy and reduces certain emissions but can lead to misfires and increased temperatures if too lean.
