Martians

Martians are the hypothetical or fictional inhabitants of the planet Mars. The term is used both in science fiction to describe intelligent beings imagined on Mars and in scientific discussions about possible life on the planet. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, a small, rocky world with a thin carbon dioxide atmosphere, evidence of past liquid water, and features such as valleys, deltas, and ancient lakebeds.

Historically, Mars has inspired speculation about life since telescopic observations of the planet’s surface. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, ideas about Martian canals popularized the notion of intelligent Martians, though later analyses found the canals to be optical illusions and the claims unsupported. Pathfinder’s Sojourner (1997) demonstrated rover tech; Spirit and Opportunity (2004) explored geology and past water activity; Curiosity (2012) assesses long-term habitability; Perseverance (2021) collects samples for potential return. Orbiters provide climate, geology, and atmospheric data to complement surface investigations.
