Martensiittisia

Martensiittisia is a term used in materials science, specifically in metallurgy, to describe the phase transformation that occurs in certain steels. This transformation is a key process in the heat treatment of steel, leading to the formation of a very hard and brittle microstructure called martensite.

The formation of martensite is a diffusionless transformation, meaning that the atoms do not move long distances relative to each other. Instead, the transformation occurs almost instantaneously through a shear mechanism. This is in contrast to diffusion-controlled transformations like pearlite or bainite formation, where atoms must move to form new phases.

The process typically involves heating steel to a high temperature, where it forms austenite, a solid solution of carbon in iron. The steel is then rapidly quenched, or cooled, at a rate fast enough to prevent diffusion. If the cooling rate is sufficiently high, the austenite transforms into martensite. The carbon atoms, trapped within the iron lattice, distort the structure, creating a body-centered tetragonal (BCT) crystal structure.

The hardness of martensite is a direct result of this strained crystal structure and the presence of interstitial carbon atoms. However, this hardness comes at the cost of ductility and toughness. Therefore, as-quenched martensitic steels are often tempered, a heat treatment process involving reheating to a lower temperature, to improve their toughness and ductility while retaining a significant portion of their hardness. The specific properties of martensitic steels can be precisely controlled by adjusting their chemical composition and the heat treatment parameters.
