Marsamxett

Marsamxett is a natural harbour located on the northern side of Malta, adjacent to the Grand Harbour. It is situated between the peninsula of Valetta and the town of Sliema. Historically, Marsamxett has played a significant role in Malta's maritime and defensive history.

The harbour was extensively fortified during the Knights of St. John's rule, with several defensive structures built along its shores. Fort Manoel, located on Manoel Island within the harbour, is a prominent example. The island itself, formerly known as Scimbar, was renamed after Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena, who commissioned the fort. During British rule, Marsamxett continued to serve as a naval base and a commercial port, often used for ship repair and maintenance.

Today, Marsamxett Harbour is a bustling hub of activity. It accommodates a marina for leisure craft, a ferry terminal connecting Sliema to Valletta, and is still used by commercial vessels. The waterfront is a popular area for residents and tourists, offering scenic views of the capital city and a vibrant promenade. The harbour's strategic location and historical significance make it an integral part of Malta's identity.
