Marginaalide

Marginaalide is a term used in social sciences and cultural studies to describe groups and phenomena at the margins of mainstream society. The word combines Estonian marginaal with the plural suffix -ide and functions as a category rather than a fixed population, reflecting fluid boundaries across contexts.

In sociology, marginaalide refer to individuals or communities experiencing marginalization—economic deprivation, unemployment, ethnic or linguistic minority status, migration, disability, or stigma. The concept foregrounds processes of exclusion, access to resources, and representation, rather than essential traits. In cultural analysis, marginaalide can denote marginal cultural forms or voices that operate outside dominant institutions yet influence broader culture, such as subcultures or vernacular media.

The term supports intersectional and comparative approaches, recognizing how class, gender, ethnicity, and age intersect at the margins. Researchers employ qualitative methods, ethnography, and discourse analysis to study marginaalide and their interactions with policy, media, and institutions.
