The Manhattan Project was a top-secret research and development undertaking by the United States with the support of the United Kingdom and Canada during World War II. Its primary objective was to produce the first nuclear weapons. The project began in 1942 and was codenamed after Manhattan, New York, where the project's initial headquarters were located.

The project involved a vast network of facilities and employed hundreds of thousands of people, though only a small fraction knew the true nature of their work. Key sites included Los Alamos, New Mexico, where the weapons were designed; Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for uranium enrichment; and Hanford, Washington, for plutonium production. Scientists like J. Robert Oppenheimer, Enrico Fermi, and Leo Szilard played crucial roles in its scientific and engineering advancements.

The culmination of the Manhattan Project was the successful detonation of the first atomic bomb, codenamed Trinity, on July 16, 1945, in the New Mexico desert. Subsequently, two atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, contributing to the end of World War II. The project's legacy is complex, encompassing both its role in ending the war and the profound ethical and geopolitical implications of nuclear weaponry.
