Mangaanidioksideja refers to compounds containing manganese in its +4 oxidation state combined with oxygen. The most common and widely known form is manganese dioxide, MnO2. This inorganic compound is a black or brown solid that is insoluble in water. Manganese dioxide is a naturally occurring mineral, with common forms including pyrolusite and polianite. It is also produced synthetically for various industrial applications.

MnO2 exhibits amphoteric properties, meaning it can react with both acids and bases. Its oxidizing power is significant, making it a useful reagent in chemical synthesis and industrial processes. For example, it is used as an oxidizing agent in the production of chlorine and potassium permanganate. In batteries, manganese dioxide serves as the cathode material in alkaline batteries and zinc-carbon dry cells, where it is reduced during the electrochemical reaction.

Beyond its chemical and industrial uses, manganese dioxide plays a role in environmental processes. It can be involved in the oxidation of dissolved iron and manganese in natural waters, contributing to their removal. Historically, it was also used in glassmaking to decolorize glass, as it counteracts the green tint caused by iron impurities. The mineral pyrolusite, a form of manganese dioxide, is the primary ore for the extraction of manganese metal.
