Makuhäiriöitä, known in English as taste disorders or dysgeusia, refer to any abnormality in the sense of taste. This can manifest as a distorted taste sensation, a phantom taste, or a complete loss of taste (ageusia). The perception of taste is a complex process involving the taste buds on the tongue, salivary glands, and the brain's interpretation of these signals.

Causes of makuhäiriöitä are diverse. Infections, particularly upper respiratory infections like the common cold or flu, are a frequent culprit. Poor oral hygiene, gum disease, and dental procedures can also affect taste. Certain medications, including those for blood pressure, chemotherapy drugs, and some antibiotics, are known to cause taste disturbances as a side effect. Neurological conditions such as Bell's palsy, head injuries, or more serious conditions like brain tumors can impair the nerves responsible for transmitting taste signals. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly of zinc or vitamin B12, have also been linked to taste changes. Smoking can diminish taste sensitivity over time. Hormonal changes, such as those during pregnancy or menopause, can also lead to altered taste perceptions.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, a physical examination, and sometimes specific taste tests to determine the nature and extent of the disorder. Treatment strategies depend entirely on the underlying cause. If medication is the cause, switching to an alternative may resolve the issue. Addressing oral hygiene problems, treating infections, or supplementing nutritional deficiencies can also be effective. In cases where the cause is not easily treatable, managing the symptoms and adapting to the altered taste sensation becomes the focus.
