Maksuvalmiusriskejä, also known as liquidity risk, refers to the risk that an entity will be unable to meet its financial obligations as they fall due. This inability can arise from a lack of sufficient liquid assets to cover immediate cash outflows or from the inability to access necessary funding sources when needed. The consequences of liquidity risk can range from minor inconvenconveniences, such as delayed payments, to severe financial distress, including insolvency and bankruptcy.

There are two primary types of maksuvalmiusriskejä. Funding liquidity risk is the risk of not being able to raise the necessary funds to meet obligations. This can occur if credit lines are withdrawn, deposits are withdrawn en masse, or capital markets become inaccessible. Market liquidity risk, on the other hand, is the risk of not being able to sell an asset quickly enough at a reasonable price to generate cash. This is particularly relevant for illiquid assets that have fewer buyers or where market conditions are unfavorable.

Financial institutions, such as banks, are particularly susceptible to liquidity risks due to the nature of their business, which involves taking short-term deposits and making long-term loans. Effective management of liquidity risk involves maintaining adequate cash reserves, diversifying funding sources, and having contingency plans in place to address potential liquidity shortfalls.
