Majori

Majori is the central and oldest district of the city of Jūrmala, Latvia. Located on the coast of the Gulf of Riga, it lies about 25 kilometers west of Riga and serves as the historic heart of the country’s seaside resort area.

The district began to develop as a resort in the late 19th century after the arrival of railway connectivity to the Gulf coast. Hotels, sanatoria, and wooden summer houses were built along the pine-fringed shoreline, establishing Majori as Jūrmala’s main resort zone and attracting visitors from Riga and beyond.

Urban landscape in Majori features a long sandy beach with a broad promenade and a notable collection of early 20th‑century wooden architecture. Jomas iela, the district’s main pedestrian street, hosts shops, cafes, and a concentration of historic villas, many preserved in late 19th- and early 20th-century styles.

Transport and administration: Majori is served by Majori railway station on the Riga–Tukums railway line and by local bus routes. In the mid-20th century, the coastal settlements were consolidated to form the city of Jūrmala, with Majori remaining its central district.

Today Majori remains a core part of Jūrmala’s resort identity, offering hotels, guesthouses, and spa facilities that attract visitors in the summer. Its preserved wooden architecture and the seaside promenade continue to define the character of the town and its appeal as a Baltic beach destination.
