The name derives from ancient terms majan meaning harbor and damis meaning gate, reflecting its historic role as a gateway for sea-borne goods.

Geography and climate: Majandamis covers about 165 square kilometers on a coastal plain. The climate is temperate maritime, with mild winters, warm summers, and regular rainfall.
