Maisemat

Maisemat is the Finnish plural noun meaning landscapes or scenery, derived from the singular maisema. It is used to describe the overall visual appearance of a place, including natural features such as forests, lakes, hills, and cultural elements like buildings or fields. In everyday language, maisemat can refer to the observed setting, for example “maisemat muuttuvat” (the landscapes change) or “kauniit maisemat” (beautiful landscapes).

In Finnish art history and criticism, the concept of maisemat is central to landscape painting (maisemamaalaus) and landscape photography.
