Maiman
Theodore Harold Maiman (1927–2007) was an American physicist and engineer best known for constructing the first working laser. In 1960, at the Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California, Maiman built a ruby laser and produced the first coherent light beam, demonstrating a practical device based on stimulated emission of radiation.
Early life and education: Maiman was born in Los Angeles, California. He earned a Bachelor of Arts
Laser development and significance: The ruby laser used a synthetic ruby crystal doped with chromium ions as
Later career and legacy: After the laser achievement, Maiman continued to contribute to photonics and the study
Overview: Maiman’s laser demonstration is regarded as a milestone in modern physics and engineering. The laser
