Magnetooptisella refers to phenomena that occur when light interacts with a magnetic field or a magnetized material. This interaction can lead to changes in the polarization of light, its intensity, or its propagation direction. One of the most well-known magneto-optical effects is the Faraday effect, where the plane of polarization of linearly polarized light is rotated when passing through a material subjected to a magnetic field parallel to the direction of light propagation. The magnitude of this rotation depends on the material, the wavelength of light, and the strength of the magnetic field.

Another significant magneto-optical effect is the Kerr effect, which is observed when light is reflected from a magnetized surface. In the polar Kerr effect, the magnetization is perpendicular to the surface, while in the longitudinal Kerr effect, it is parallel to the surface and the plane of incidence. The Kerr effect also causes a rotation of the polarization and can induce ellipticity in the reflected light. These effects are crucial in various technological applications. For instance, the Faraday effect is utilized in optical isolators, which allow light to travel in one direction only, preventing unwanted reflections in laser systems. The Kerr effect is employed in magnetic read-write heads for hard disk drives and in magneto-optical data storage devices.
