It is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude and direction. The magnitude of the magnetic field strength indicates how strong the magnetic influence is at a particular point in space, while the direction points towards the north pole of a hypothetical magnetic monopole.

The SI unit for magnetic field strength is the tesla (T). One tesla is equivalent to one newton per ampere-meter. Another commonly used unit, particularly in older literature or specific applications, is the gauss (G), where 1 T = 10,000 G. The magnetic field strength is generated by moving electric charges, such as electric currents, and by intrinsic magnetic moments of elementary particles like electrons.

In the context of electromagnetism, magnetic field strength is closely related to magnetic flux density, which is also often referred to as magnetic field. While the terms are frequently used interchangeably, a subtle distinction can be made where magnetic flux density represents the total magnetic field passing through a unit area, and magnetic field strength can sometimes refer to a more idealized concept or a component of the field.
