MagSafe

MagSafe is a brand of magnetic charging and attachment technology developed by Apple Inc. It refers to two generations of products that share a magnetic interface: a power connector system for MacBook laptops and a magnetic wireless charging ecosystem for iPhone. The two lines are distinct in design and function but are united by the use of magnets to guide and secure the connection.

In the MacBook line, MagSafe debuted in 2006 as a detachable, magnetized power connector that would safely detach if the cord was tugged, helping prevent accidents. MagSafe 2, a slimmer variant, followed later. Apple phased out the MagSafe family in 2016 in favor of USB-C for most models. In 2021 the company reintroduced a MagSafe-powered connection for newer MacBook Pro models, referred to as MagSafe 3, continuing the concept of a magnetic, easily disconnectable power link for high-end laptops.

For iPhone, Apple launched a separate MagSafe system in 2020 with the iPhone 12 series. The MagSafe Charger is a circular magnetic pad that aligns with built‑in magnets in the phone to deliver wireless charging. The system supports a range of accessories, including cases, wallets, mounts, and a battery pack, all designed to attach magnetically. The iPhone MagSafe charger uses the Qi standard and can deliver up to about 15 watts of power with the appropriate adapter.

Compatibility and safety notes: The MacBook MagSafe and iPhone MagSafe systems use different magnet arrangements and are not interchangeable. Magnets may affect certain implanted medical devices or cards, so users should follow manufacturer guidance when using MagSafe accessories with compatible devices.
