MZRCDs

MZRCDs, short for Mazda MZR Cylinder Deactivation, is a technology developed by Mazda for certain gasoline engines. Its primary function is to improve fuel efficiency by temporarily shutting down some of the engine's cylinders under light load conditions. This means that when the vehicle is cruising at a steady speed or experiencing minimal acceleration, the engine can operate on fewer cylinders, reducing the amount of fuel consumed.

The system typically deactivates two of the four cylinders in an inline-four engine. When cylinder deactivation is engaged, the engine control unit (ECU) signals to stop fuel injection and close the intake and exhaust valves for the selected cylinders. This reduces pumping losses and overall engine friction. Conversely, when the driver demands more power, such as during acceleration or when climbing a hill, the ECU quickly reactivates the deactivated cylinders, ensuring full engine performance is available.

MZRCDs is designed to be transparent to the driver, meaning they should not feel any interruption or change in engine operation when the system engages or disengages. The transition is intended to be smooth and seamless. The technology aims to strike a balance between performance and economy, offering a practical way to enhance fuel savings without compromising the driving experience. It is part of Mazda's broader efforts to optimize engine efficiency across its vehicle lineup.
