MTÜdest

MTÜ stands for Mittetulundusühing, which translates to Non-profit Association in English. These are legal entities in Estonia that are established for public benefit or to promote the common interests of their members, rather than for profit. MTÜs can engage in a wide range of activities, including cultural, educational, social, environmental, and sports initiatives. They are often founded by individuals or groups who wish to contribute to society or a specific cause.

To establish an MTÜ, a minimum of two individuals are required. They must draft and adopt a statute, which outlines the association's goals, structure, membership rules, and governance. The MTÜ must then be registered in the Estonian Non-profit Associations and Foundations Register. Once registered, the MTÜ can operate legally, enter into contracts, employ staff, and receive funding from various sources such as membership fees, donations, grants, and public tenders.

The governance of an MTÜ is typically managed by a board elected by its members. Members can be individuals or legal entities. The activities of an MTÜ are subject to Estonian law, and they are required to maintain accounting records and submit annual reports. While MTÜs are non-profit, they can generate income to cover their operational costs and fund their projects. However, any surplus generated must be reinvested into the association's activities and cannot be distributed among members.
