MPEGperheen

MPEGperheen is a playful, informal term used within the MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) community to refer collectively to the various standards and specifications developed by the group. The word "perheen" is Finnish for "family," suggesting that all the MPEG standards are related, like members of a family. It's not an official designation but rather a colloquialism used in discussions, presentations, and internal communications among MPEG members and those familiar with its work.

The MPEG group is renowned for its work on video and audio compression standards, and its output has profoundly impacted digital media. Key members of this "family" include MPEG-1, which brought us the MP3 audio format and the beginnings of video compression; MPEG-2, widely used for digital television broadcasting and DVDs; and MPEG-4, which encompasses a broader range of multimedia applications including advanced video coding (AVC), often referred to as H.264, and various audio coding formats. More recent additions to the MPEGperheen include standards like HEVC (H.265), VVC (H.266), and numerous others addressing areas such as 3D graphics, metadata, and low-latency streaming. The use of "MPEGperheen" highlights the continuity and evolution of MPEG's efforts to standardize digital media technologies.
