MPEG12

MPEG12 is not an officially recognized standard of the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). There is no ISO/IEC designation or published standard identified as "MPEG-12." In practice, the term may appear in marketing materials or informal discussions, but it does not correspond to a formal MPEG specification.

MPEG, jointly managed by ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11, develops compression standards for video and audio. The best-known MPEG standards are MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. MPEG-1 provided basic video and audio coding for low-bitrate media in the 1990s. MPEG-2 expanded on video and audio coding for higher-quality applications such as DVDs and broadcast TV. MPEG-4 introduced more advanced features and, later, codecs such as AVC (H.264) and AAC.

Because there is no MPEG-12, confusion can arise from shorthand in marketing, misreading "MPEG-1/2" as a single term, or references to subsets or profiles of existing standards. When documenting, use the official designation (for example, MPEG-2 Part 2 video, MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC) rather than "MPEG12."
