MMAhitsauksessa, also known as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) or stick welding, is a common and versatile welding process. It utilizes a consumable electrode coated in flux to lay the weld. The electric arc generated between the electrode and the workpiece melts both materials, forming a molten weld pool that solidifies to create a strong joint.

The flux coating on the electrode plays a crucial role. It vaporizes during welding, creating a shielding gas that protects the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination like oxygen and nitrogen, which can weaken the weld. Additionally, the flux forms slag on the surface of the solidified weld, which needs to be chipped away after the welding is complete.

MMAhitsauksessa is known for its simplicity and portability, making it suitable for various applications, including construction, repair work, and fabrication. It can be used to weld a wide range of metals, including steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The process is also effective in outdoor or windy conditions due to the protective nature of the flux. However, it can produce more spatter and requires more skill to achieve aesthetically pleasing welds compared to some other welding methods. Operator technique is paramount for controlling the arc length, travel speed, and electrode angle to produce a sound weld.
