MES integration refers to connecting a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) with enterprise systems, shop-floor equipment, and data sources to coordinate production and enable real-time data exchange. The aim is to align manufacturing operations with business planning, improve visibility, and support compliance and traceability.

Scope and components: MES integration touches ERP, SCM, PLM, SCADA, PLCs, historians, and quality systems. Interfaces can be point-to-point or use middleware, iPaaS, or service-oriented architectures. Real-time data, event streams, and batch records are exchanged through adapters, APIs, and data brokers.

Standards and data models: ISA-95 provides the framework to map manufacturing processes to business systems; B2MML expresses ISA-95 in machine-readable formats. Real-time device data is commonly exchanged via OPC UA or MTConnect. Consistent data models for orders, materials, process parameters, and quality are essential for interoperability.

Data flows and functions: ERP-to-MES order releases, material availability, scheduling, dispatching, and WIP tracking. MES collects batch records, completes genealogy and traceability, records quality data, and triggers maintenance or corrective actions. Analytics and reporting pull data from MES, historians, and quality systems.

Approaches, architecture, benefits, and challenges: An integration layer or middleware enables scalable connections and data harmonization. Benefits include improved visibility, reduced manual entry, better quality, and higher equipment effectiveness. Challenges include data model alignment, legacy systems, cybersecurity, latency, and organizational change.
